The precision of Wata Igarashi’s avant-garde and mesmerising sound drew me to redesign his Kioku EP cover. As a fan of his production, it was a little disorienting to see it misrepresented graphically each time I stream his music. While I understand it was released under The Bunker NY and their branding must be applied, I think the unique sound Wata Igarashi has can be visually reflected far more accurately and therefore attract more plays on streaming platforms.
The idea behind this cover represents my experience of witnessing Wata Igarashi perform his craft live. From start to finish, his set felt like a hypnotic journey, a sense of elevation that moved me through a series of frames representing each beat. The mid frequencies seemed to morph, changing the space of the dancefloor and shaping the movement of the crowd.
This lead to the final outcome using a geometric journey of morphing shapes shifting in space and colour. Creating a contemporary psychedelic sense of movement that acts as the main visual identity for this reconceptualisation of Kioku.
